The sitter modelled full face, wearing full dress uniform, orders and silk sash, his jacket embroidered with oak leaves and with fringed epaulettes, signed and dated Dieudonne Sculpt 1824, / Luttetiae and with inscribed presentation plaque J.E.J.A.MACDONALD, DUC DE TARENTE, MAL DE FRANCE, rich mid and dark brown patination, 70cm high

Alexander Macdonald (1765-1840) was made the Marshal of France after the battle of Wagram. He successfully negotiated the abdication of Napoleon with the allies. As well as receiving numerous military medals and titles he was appointed chief officer of the Legion D'Honneur.

Jacques Dieudonne was one of the most celebrated and fashionable portrait sculptors of his time. In great demand as a portraitist and engraver of medals he studied under the great master Bosio. His commissions included The Duc D'Orleans, the Duc D'Angouleme, Louis Phillipe and Charles X.
