JASON & THE ARGONAUTS (1963) - Ray Harryhausen Hand-Drawn Concept of Jason (Todd Armstrong) and the Hydra
A hand-drawn concept sketch c. 1961 showing Jason (Todd Armstrong) and the Hydra from the Don Chaffey fantasy adventure Jason and the Argonauts. It shows Jason, sword in hand, advancing on the mythical seven-headed serpent. It is executed on white paper in pencil, with red pencil highlights added to clearly define the beast. A double-lined black ink border completes the composition. Harryhausen commented that this powerful image was the one that sold the movie project to the studio. The edges are irregularly cut and show minor wear and folds from age. Dimensions:36 cm x 53 cm (14" x 21")The final, key art version of this image features on pages 110-111 of The Art of Ray Harryhausen by Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton, and on page 166of Ray Harryhausen An Animated Life by Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton.
